Beginner Modern Calligraphy Workshop at Caroline Gardiner, Marylebone
In December, I had the pleasure of teaching a beginner modern calligraphy workshop at the beautiful Caroline Gardiner store in Marylebone, London. Set in the heart of the city, the shop provided the perfect backdrop for a cosy and creative afternoon, surrounded by thoughtfully designed stationery, gifts and festive details.
The workshop was designed especially for beginners, with no previous calligraphy experience needed. We started by exploring the basics of modern calligraphy, including how to hold the pen, create thick and thin strokes, and build letterforms using a relaxed and contemporary style. I guided everyone step by step, allowing plenty of time to practice and ask questions along the way.
As the session progressed, confidence grew quickly and it was lovely to see each person develop their own rhythm and style. We worked through lowercase letters before moving on to connecting letters and forming simple words, with a focus on enjoying the process rather than striving for perfection.
Teaching in December in London with all the Christmas lights surrounding the area, added an extra layer of magic to the workshop. Many attendees were excited to use their new skills for handwritten Christmas cards, gift tags and festive projects, making the workshop both practical and inspiring for the season.
Hosting this workshop at Caroline Gardiner was such a joy. The welcoming atmosphere and beautiful surroundings made it a truly special experience, and I am so grateful to everyone who joined me for a creative and calming break from the busy lead-up to Christmas.
